Artist Statement
I'm interested in the physical experience of the loss of time through labour. How does one capture that absence?
I see the stitch as an imprint of the passage of time. Every stitch made is a concrete connection to time and space. It is indexical.
In this way, a stitch is more than an object. It is a gesture, made by a person, in a specific time, at a specific place. It is a record of who, where, when and how.
In this way, a series of stitches is more than the sum of its individuals - it is a timeline.
When I cut into fabric, I am creating a space in which to insert a new timeline.
